A Memorable Trip to the Zoo
Saturday, April 17, 2010

Most of the funny moments in my life are related to my brother, Parathan. One of them happened few years back, but I can still remember it quite clearly.

It was the June holidays 2008 so my brother and I went to the Singapore zoo with my friends, Arvind and Deepu, and their family came along too. We were having lots of fun taking pictures and chatting while we watched the animals and their humorous antics.
We were walking towards the next animal after seeing the Orang Utan when Arvind, Parathan’s best friend, sighted a steep and curvy slope. “Wait, I want try something” he said as he went up the slope, and darted down at full speed such that he bumped into Parathan.

Parathan, one who is always up for anything that Arvind tries, raced up the slope and, he too, sprinted down the slope speedily. At the same time, an animal made a loud noise. Distracted, we turned to see what the matter was. When the animal made the sound, Parathan too was sidetracked from reaching the foot of the slope safely. Thus, he lost balance and fell into a nearby bush. Seeing that the animal which made the noise was just a seal, we turned back to watch Parathan.
However, he was missing. “PARATHAN! PARATHAN!!”, we called out to him worriedly but he did not answer us. As times flew by, I became frightened and started searching the areas around the slope and the places near the Orang Utan checking if he had wandered off to watch an animal without our knowledge. Deepu and her mother, too, joined in the search while Arvind started talking nonsense like “Oh my god! Parathan has vaporized! Aliens kidnapped him into outer space to examine his brain!” . When we realized that Parathan was n o w h e r e

to be found, we all began to panic. Deepu’s father suggested calling for help.
Just as he finished dialing the number and was about to push the call button, unexpectedly, an arm emerged out of the bush near which Deepu was standing. Startled by the sudden appearance of the arm, Deepu screamed. Slowly and dramatically, Parathan got out of the bush the way; heroes make their grand appearance in movies after something tragic happened and everyone was convinced that the hero is dead. Realizing that Parathan had been here just a few feet away, while all of us searched far and wide for him, we all began laughing uncontrollably.

Fortunately, he did not get hurt as the bush was full of soft leaves and was thick enough to break his fall. The day ended with many more antics of Parathan and Arvinds’ however this was the most captivating and memorable one.
